Brent, You Are Still #1

Brent Faiyaz released 'Icon' on Valentine's Day and it is STILL in my rotation. Off first listen I loved nearly every track on this album. Since this album is only 10 songs and 1 is literally white noise, every second on this project matters. Brent, who is known for his toxic behavior in relationships has seemed to turn a new leaf and is now writing 'sing in the rain to her' ballads. He legitimately went slow-motion, walk-on-the-beach-in-the-rain for the 'wrong faces' music video. Four months later, Icon still has me in a chokehold, shoutout to Brent for this.

Song of the year potential

One of the lead singles from this project, and it absolutely set the tone. This is a serenade-worthy song, so start singing to your girl when the pre-chorus hits! I'm not sure if it's just my ears, but I couldn't quite understand what he was saying in the chorus. After reading the lyrics, I realized how ‘love song’ and dramatic it is, which only adds to its sentiment.

I'll pack and ship myself
If I have to, I'll drive this ship myself (All night)
If I have to, you can't be by yourself (Alone)
If you don't have to, I'll do what I have to
I think this the yearning y'all been looking for
Uh, yeah, I'll go so far as to put myself inside my
Goyard if I have to (Would you believe it?)
I'm in love, you in love (Help), I'm above, you my drug
Love the callback to shipping himself to her if he needs to. More specifically a Goyard bag

Song of the year potential

This was instantly favorite song on first listen. I've seen some hot & cold behavior before, so I can tell Brent really speaking from the mind here.

I love this + on repeat

The more I listen to Brent, the more alike we are. Maybe it's a September thing? This one was hitting hard some of my favorite lyrics on the entire project. The vocal runs towards then end are chef's kiss.

Is this a safe space for me? (Mm)
To lead with honesty? (Yeah)
To show this part of me? (That nobody sees)
Is this a safe space for me? (Safe space)

This is the nastiest beat on the whole album. Thank you to each producer here, great work all around.

Boring

It doesn't sound bad just boring. All the lyrics are very vague and give off the vibe of someone who is writing a love song for the first time. But definitely not terrible, if I am listening through I can let it rock.
